Organization: Lumos Foundation
Country: United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Closing date: 26 Nov 2017

Across the globe, an estimated eight million children live in institutions and orphanages. At least 80% are not orphans but are separated from families. They are deprived of the close, loving adult engagement a family provides; their physical, intellectual and emotional development is harmed; and they are exposed to significant risk of abuse and neglect. These are some of the world’s most disadvantaged children.

At Lumos, an international NGO founded by J.K. Rowling and the UK 2015 Charity of the Year, we believe this is a solvable problem. We have developed a model of ‘deinstitutionalisation’ to support countries to reform child care and protection systems based on institutions and replace them with health, education and social care services which keep families together in the community.

As Lumos expands globally, we need a range of skilled professionals to work in our diverse and international team to champion the rights of all children to grow up within a loving family. We are now looking for a motivated individual to play a key role in Lumos’ international team:

This exciting role will be part of a brand new team established within our GTAS unit and will educate, empower and engage our internal programme teams and external stakeholders on DI through training, technical advice and toolkits. Reporting to our Deinstitutionalisation Support Manager, you will be a champion and advocate for creating capacity and developing the technical understanding of family strengthening and DI work within governments, civil society and service providers. You will be responsible for planning, organising and implementing training and learning areas, such as delivering technical training, providing advice and guidance, producing toolkits and resources and delivering inter-country study visits for governments and organisational representatives working on DI and family strengthening services. You will have a solid technical understanding and experience as a trainer, or in a technical or practitioner position in some, but not all, relevant areas of DI, such as social work, inclusive education, disability services, health services, alternative care, family preservation projects or community services. You will have a proven track record of child protection and safeguarding, be willing to travel both nationally and internationally, have excellent communication skills and a commitment to Lumos’ mission.
